Back to Current Journal

The Grace Journal is a place where Rev. Wambugu, and perhaps occasionally others of the Grace Ministries staff, will summarize the work of the day or week. We want you to feel that you are an active part of our work and our lives, and hope that this on-going journal of our activities – our joys, our sorrows, and our day-to-day work – will help to bring you more closely into our world.

God bless you for your interest and your support!

This was a good week.
It is now very cold as we approach the cold season that starts from June. The children are now in their very heavy jackets to beat the cold weather.
The children started their first monthly continuous Assessment tests for this term and they ran for two days; Thursday and Friday.
This is also the final week for me to hold the office of School administrator as I will be taking another job from the 4th June. We had a prospective replacement that came to see what Administrative work at Grace entails and check if she can take up the position. She was recommended by Community Presbyterian Church Session, but she was however non committal and she said she will give the feedback soon. We are however shopping for a suitable replacement which is difficult when you relate the remuneration with work expectation and we pray that the Lord will give us someone. Samuel will have to shoulder the load until he gets a helper. He needs your prayers.
We will have a long weekend and we will resume School on Tuesday as we will have a public holiday on Monday.

4th Week ending 24th May 2008

This was a good week.

The rains are here with us and it is now very cold. The cold season has begun and we have started looking for our warm jackets. We were dreading the portion of the road leading to the school and now we are hopeful as the local authority has started working on the road and they have delivered Lorries of loose chips (Murram) to cover that part of the road. We hope they will work on it to completion before the rains pours down heavily again. We wait to see what they will do, for we might be compelled to do drainage to give the section of the road a longer duration.

Learning has continued very well and we are glad that the teachers have continued teaching the children well. Reverend Samuel has also continued teaching Mathematics to the older children in the early morning (7 am- 8am) morning. On Wednesday he noted with concern that Josphine Gitiri one of the children in class eight ( Sponsored by 1 st Pres. Women Fellowship) has been having a hearing and sight problem. This problem had not been detected by the School and neither had the mother. The school advised that she goes to the hospital as soon as possible and it financed the cost. She went to hospital and it was confirmed that the two problems were there and one eye is really in a bad shape. She will however go back to hospital and get full medical attention now that the problem is known.

Friday afternoon, parents, pupils of Grade seven had a meeting with the teachers. The aim of the meeting was to discuss last term's class performance which was not very exciting according to Grace School Standard. The teachers explained their concern, parents gave their observations and the pupils also talked. An interesting observation was that most parents expressed appreciation that they had observed remarkable improvements in their children work. There was an agreement that the team is going to work together and improve the current performance of this class which the teachers think does not work hard enough. The meeting ended at 5 pm with a cup of tea.

3rd Week ending 16th May 2008

This was a good week.
The week started well and the weather has continued to be quite warm.
All the children continued to come to school and the teachers faithfully coming to teach them. The new teacher reported to replace Teacher Patrick Njoroge who left us a week ago. She is Keziah Wairimu and she will take up the same subjects and responsibilities as the other teacher. We are glad to have her and she will help in the teaching as well as patronize some clubs.
Reverend Samuel started teaching and giving the older children extra teaching in Mathematics. He does this very early in the morning when the children have remedial teaching.
On Friday Reverend Samuel was away for the day as he traveled miles away to attend a funeral.
The children will also start attending their weekend classes this week starting tomorrow as last week they did not come. This class allows them to have extra time with their teachers and a good time for revision.
The children cleaned their classes and week ended well with no major incidents.
God Bless.

1st Week ending 9th May 2008

This was a good week it was also the first week of the term.
The children reported well on the first day and in good numbers. The parents also reported on the first day to make payments of school fees.
The children were excited to be back and see their fellow classmates and were more excited to see the dining hall. They are now glad to use it for their morning assembly as it is now less cold and the morning showers will not interfere with the assemblies.
On Tuesday one of the teachers did not turn up and we only learnt of his departure later in the day. He however did not leave us in the right way and procedure as required by the school, where one is expected to give a months notice before leaving us and handover to the office books supplied to him/her. We have followed him up and he promised to come and settle up the matter with the office. We quickly conducted another interview and we got another teacher who will join us on Monday and take up the duties.
The accounts office was also busy collecting money and making purchases for the new term. The accounts office also paid the April staff salaries to ensure that the teachers had something to enable them start the term in good way.
We finally sent out our newsletter to friends and partners it will also be available in our website please look for it to keep abreast of our work and our ongoing projects.
We have started the term on a good note and pray that it will continue this way.
Please continue to pray with us and for us for a smooth term and Gods provision to our pressing needs.
The children cleaned their classes and the week ended well.
God Bless!

WEEK ENDING 3RD MAY 2008.
The rain has subsided and it is sunny. The gardens looks great and this is a good sign for us . There has been no farming in the regions that produce most food due to the violent displacement of people during after election violence. This is no good for Kenya as famine is definite.
The Remedial teaching ended officially on Wednesday as Thursday was the Labor Day Holiday. I (Samuel) requested the grade eight if they were willing to come and we continue with them on Thursday and Friday and they agreed. I had to do 5 hours each day. I love teaching, but not when I have a very severe cold which I got on Wednesday night. I did however hold myself and we finished the week.
2ND term begins Monday and today Saturday was the day to buy the groceries for the Kitchen and stationeries. Jane and Miriam had all this taken care of and we are all set for the new term on Monday. The children will be excited to find that they now have a roofed Dinning Hall. I intend to take early morning (7am-8am) teaching God willing and giving me the strength to do so.
Our Newsletter for the period Jan- April 2008 is ready and it will be sent out next week.
Have a nice one and keep us in your prayers.
Samuel
