Back to Current Journal

The Grace Journal is a place where Rev. Wambugu, and perhaps occasionally others of the Grace Ministries staff, will summarize the work of the day or week. We want you to feel that you are an active part of our work and our lives, and hope that this on-going journal of our activities – our joys, our sorrows, and our day-to-day work – will help to bring you more closely into our world.

God bless you for your interest and your support!

GRACE SCHOOL CHILDREN ARE OUT ON CHRISTMAAS BREAK:

The School calender which is followed in Kenya has all the Schools closed for Christmas until January. In the past we did not take the whole break but used a few weeks for remedial teaching. This time we are not going to do remedial teaching because there is a lot of construction going on.

On tuesday the children had a Christmas party. There was a lot of eating, dancing and merry making. The teachers were very happy at the academic performance of the children. We intend to post some of the photographs on the Grace Newsletter. We have our staff meeting on Wednesday 29th. We take our time to crtically evaluate our performance in the year and also planning the way forward. It is not possible for you to be physically present with us, but you can send us your thoughts and ideas. We value them.

There is a lot of rain which is causing havoc and death in some parts of Kenya by sweeping away bridges and making most roads impassible.

The irony of this is that we are now crying to be helped from the rain and in just a while we shall be crying to be assisted from drought. We at Grace School are thinking of how we can harvest and store the water during the rain season and use it during dry periods. This is possible because we have enough roof space to warrant such an undertaking.

There is a lot of construction going on and we are very thankful to God for giving us the needed funds to do the work.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

Samuel.

WEEK ENDING SATURDAY 18TH NOV.2006:

This was a week for reckoning for both teachers and pupils as they did their end of the year examination. This examination is prepared to cover the curriculum for the whole year and every teacher is supposed to have covered all the materials adequately. This examination tells two main things:
Did the teacher cover the required syllabus?
Did the children understand what was taught to them?
The examination result shows a mean grade of 80% which is an excellent performance. We thank God for the effort the teacher are putting in their work.

Monica and I took medical tests to ascertain how the medicines are doing in controlling our sugar levels. We are thankful to the people who supported us financially for the tests were expensive. We sent the test results to Dorothy Davison of International Medical Alliance through Rev. Steve Sexton of UT. Pastoral Care for their interpretations and treatment plan. Some results were not very good especially what they referred as level of Cholesterol and Triciychlides. The IMA Medical team is coming to Kenya from 7th Dec-20th December. They will do a free Clinic to Grace School on the 8th. They will bring the necessary medicines that we need. This group has done these four years in a row and they assist a lot of people when they come.

The School will take a Christmas break from Wednesday next week. We shall immediately start constructing the Dinning Hall/ Kitchen as well as finishing the uncompleted construction of classrooms.

The term has been extremely busy on many fronts. Our fatigue is suppressed by the joy of what we have accomplished as a team.

We are very grateful to God for the healing he is gradually giving to Rev Marc Sherrod Pastor of Bethel Presbyterian Church Kingston TN.

Samuel.

WEEK ENDING 11TH NOVEMBER 2006:

The week was extremely wet. There has been very heavy rainfall especially in the morning. Interestingly the rain starts at 8a.m after the children are already at School. We are using the opportunity to plant vegetables. There will be no famine in January as it was this year.

The learning continued without incidents. Jane went to Nairobi to buy end of the year examination in Nairobi. The examination starts next week on Wednesday the 15th. It will go for the week. The Christmas Party is scheduled for Tuesday 21 and the School goes for Christmas break from Wednesday 22.

The evening has been very busy for me. A friend died and a member of the church passes and is culturally expected I have to lead prayers every evening. The burial was on Friday and I am now relaxed.

The ministry of HIV/AIDS is becoming very demanding. Although the claim is that infection rate has deceased, this is highly subjective on the ground.

There is a Medical Team coming from Knoxville (International Medical alliance) and Grace is facilitating their coming. We have applied for their Medical Practitioners permit. They will do a clinic to the Grace Children and their families on 7th December. Monica and I are looking forward to their coming for our Diabetes Medicine is finished.

Pray for the children as they start their examinations.

Gods grace and peace be with you this week.

Samuel

WEEK ENDING 4TH NOVEMBER 2006:

The week was at the end of the month. The issue of money was a major concern. Teachers salary, Electricity and water bills needed to be paid. There was no money to do this. The Fees paid by the children for third term paid teachers salary for September and bought extra corn for storage because it was harvest time and the price was good. Supporting churches and friends send their gift later in the month and this means that we have on occasion to pay our bills when they are overdue.

The children are busy with their work. On Friday, they enjoyed eating eggs with their mid morning tea. The eggs were a gift from a friend of a Grace School and a member of Community Presbyterian Church. Another member gave pencils to the children. We are encouraged when we receive local support however meagre because it tells very loudly that our services are appreciated. Jane always sends appreciation notes when ever we receive any gift.

HIV/AIDS has again taken another close friend of Grace School and also a member of Community Presbyterian Church. He has left a widow and three children aged Six years, two and half years and two weeks. As a Pastor to the deceased the practice is to lead prayer meetings at the home of the deceased which takes place every evening until burial. It is a demanding moment for this period may be as long as a week or more. The meeting is attended by many people from the neighbourhoods and it is an opportune time for proclaiming the gospel.

A student named Rebecca Duerst from Bethel University has requested for a teaching opportunity at Grace School. Jane is in correspondence with her and looking to extending such an opportunity. The School Committee will decide if it is okay when all the details are finalised.

Have a blessed week.

Samuel.
