Grace Ministries' News Update

April - June, 2005

Dear friends and Partners,

We are half through the year 2005 and it has been a period of amazing accomplishment in the Ministry of Grace School.

ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEE

Left to Right:

Pastor James Mbatia, Mrs. Jane Njenga, Mrs. Mirriam Mugambi,
Mrs. Monica Wambugu, Rev. Samuel Wambugu

The administrative committee of Grace School has remained focused. Mrs. Jane Njenga the Head Teacher and Pastor James Mbatia the Assistant Administrator have done splendid work in directing the nurture of the minds and the spirits of Grace school children, their families and the community. Monica’s focus is on the provision of physical needs particularly food and uniforms.

Miriam diligently takes care of the business office and keeps good accounts of all financial transactions.

Samuel continues to offer his unique people empowerment leadership behind the scene. This helps the staff to own and enjoy their work.

MID-MORNING TEA AND BREAD FOR CHILDRERN

We are going through an extremely cold period (Highs 18 and Lows 8 degrees Celsius), which will go through August. Most of the children are cold for they do not have warm clothes. The School Committee saw it prudent to introduce a hot cup of tea and a slice of bread during 11 am break to alleviate the cold. This has a positive learning impact. The children are no longer shivering and sleepy, but are awake and active as they look forward to eating lunch at 1 o’clock.

Jane the Head teacher with teacher Nelly giving tea to the children. Children dressing tells about our current weather.

Most of the children come to school without breakfast. Cold is usually very harsh on an empty stomach and this cup of tea was a welcome relief. The cost of doing this is very modest. It is $ 15 a day, $ 90 for a six-day week and $ 360 a month. We thank God for a family that gave us $ 300 to start this ministry to the children. The gift will do to the 1st week of July and it will be gone. We trust that God will bless this noble undertaking and will provide the needed money.

IMPROMPTU INSPECTION OF GRACE SCHOOL BY MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

Kenya government, ministry of education has taken unprecedented interest in non-government education providing institutions. Questionable institutions that are exploitive to the parents without delivering the required standard of education have prompted this. They do not have adequate facilities and employ unqualified teachers. Grace School scored very high on all areas exempt the land being inadequate from the legal requirement of two acres. The inspectors gave commendation for the innovative and unique feeding program using varieties of vegetables produced from the School garden. Many Schools have been directed to close.

ELECTRICITY FOR GRACE SCHOOL

The school is now all wired in readiness for electricity connection. We are expecting the Electricity board inspection on 8th July and immediate connection there after. Thank you for the people who gave money for this work through 1st Presbyterian Church Knoxville. We can now install computers in the school as well as introduce tailoring. We can then teach practical skills, make our own children clothes and possibly give some services to the community at a small fee. This is all contingent to the funds becoming available.

NEAR DISASTER AT GRACE SCHOOL

The heavy rains that are pounding almost caused disaster. Grace Children take their food under trees because there is no dining room. One morning just before the children went for lunch, a heavy branch fell just at the place the children were to sit. The story could have different if it just fell an hour later. This is nothing more than divine protection. We are very apprehensive of letting the children sit under the same trees.

 PRAISES:

  • God’s provision of funds to complete the most needed budgeted capital expenditure for the year 2005. The three classrooms are complete, good furniture for children and teachers and installation of electricity.

  • Sacrifice and dedication by Grace Staff in doing their work.

  • Good report from the ministry of education inspectorate team.

  • Encouraging community moral support

  • For the continued prayers and financial support we receive from churches and individuals. It could not be possible to contribute in our own small way to the building of the Kingdom of God without you.

 PRAYERS:
  • God’s continued protection to the children and staff. There is general insecurity in Kenya although the government is doing commendable job.

  • There is urgent need for School Kitchen/ Dinning hall. Help us to remove these children from eating under the trees.

  • We need three computers. One for business office, another one for teachers and another one for children. Most teachers have never sat behind a computer.
God bless you. Thank you for being our friend and Partner in ministry. It is our joy to hear from you.
